Medication Reminders vs. Medication Administration: What Families Should Know

Understand the important boundary between non-medical reminders and clinical medication support.
Medication routines can be stressful. Understanding reminders and administration helps families set safe expectations.
A reminder is non-medical support: prompting someone to follow an established schedule or bringing a pre-organized container within reach.
Administration includes selecting, measuring, preparing or deciding whether a medicine should be taken. Those actions require an appropriately qualified clinical professional.
Keep one current medication list and use a schedule prepared by the client, family, pharmacist or prescriber.
Missed doses, side effects, symptoms and timing questions should go to the prescribing healthcare professional or pharmacist.
If someone appears seriously unwell or may have taken an unsafe dose, contact emergency services or poison control immediately.
